Gabe Newell Is Doing an AMA Tomorrow

Valve boss Gabe Newell will conduct an AMA on Reddit tomorrow, January 17, it has been announced (via Kotaku). The AMA begins that day at 3 PM PT / 6 PM ET right here on Reddit.

This won’t be Newell’s first AMA. He held one in March 2014 where he did not discuss Half-Life 3, but instead revealed his favorite non-Valve game, his $1 million charity donation, and how he’s never thought about leaving Valve, among many other things.

Valve is a giant in the PC gaming world, so there will no doubt be a flood of questions. We’ll report back with information from Newell’s newest AMA tomorrow after it begins.

What are you hoping to hear from Newell? Let us know in the comments below!

World of Warcraft Vanilla Server Developers Clash

Share.

It all started out so well.

In a surprising turn of events, the two teams responsible for the burgeoning World of Warcraft legacy scene have come to blows.

As reported by Eurogamer, Nostalrius and Elysium – the teams who have resurrected vanilla World of Warcraft from the dead – have clashed over their respective visions for the project.

In a blog post written by Nostalrius, the team requested that Elysium cease using the server data they provided last year. Legacy World of Warcraft players, Nostalrius wrote, are being looked upon as pirates, which is contrary to Nostalrius’ original vision of building a healthy WoW community.

“The goal was to relieve pressure on Blizzard by providing a home for vanilla WoW in order to lower tensions and begin building a WoW community that includes legacy WoW players”, wrote Nostalrius. “When looking back to what happened, we have the feeling that the main objective was missed.”

“We know that Nostalrius carries the hopes of the legacy community but moving from ‘fan server’ to ‘pirate server’ reputation makes it harder to convince that legacy fans have a place on the WoW community. Until this stigma is removed, it’s unlikely any true progress towards official legacy content can be achieved.”

Elysium responded in a forum post titled ‘Elysium will prevail!’

“It is with sadness that we must act under such circumstances,” wrote Elysium. “However, rest assured that our loyalties remain with the community in all things.”

Elysium went on to explain that the team will discontinue use of the Nostalrius core.

“By then, we will have completed Anathema, which will be equal to or superior to the Nostalrius core. We assure you that you will not feel any difference in the cores except for a potential increase in quality. We have been continuously updating the Anathema core side-by-side with the Nostalrius core.

All characters that have existed in the game world since Elysium’s launch until now will be maintained and all Nostalrius specific data will be wiped.  Nostalrius realms will be renamed to Anathema PvP and Darrowshire PvE. A 30-minute maintenance will occur at 8:00 PM server time to apply the rename and the removal of unclaimed characters.”

There will obstinately be no changes to the player experience, then, but it’s certainly an odd turn of events for a project where everyone seemed to share the same goal.

Gearbox CEO Doesn’t See Borderlands 3 Coming to Nintendo Switch

Share.

Nintendo has “other priorities,” according to Randy Pitchford.

Borderlands 3 won’t likely come to Nintendo Switch, if a recent statement made by Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford is any indication.

When asked by a fan on Twitter about the possibility of Borderlands 3 coming to Switch, Pitchford said, “I do not see that as happening. We were talking to Nintendo, but that stopped for some reason. They have other priorities.”

In April of last year, Pitchford confirmed Borderlands 3 is in development at Gearbox, revealing that Battleborn art director Scott Kester has shifted his focus to the third entry in the popular FPS role-playing series. No specific platforms for the game have yet been announced.

While it doesn’t look like Gearbox Software intends to release Borderlands 3 for Nintendo Switch, a number of other third-party developers have announced plans to support the console. For a look at what’s on the horizon for Nintendo’s next console, here’s a list of every game confirmed for Switch.

Bethesda’s Parent Company Zenimax Comments on Lawsuit Against Facebook, Oculus

Share.

Zuckerberg called to testify.

Zenimax has issued a statement the day before Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is due to testify in court in the intellectual property case against his company.

Zenimax said it and id Software, the company behind Doom, “welcome the opportunity” to present what it claims is “substantial evidence” against Facebook and Oculus in the case.

The full statement provided to IGN by a Zenimax representative is below:

“With the start of the trial of our case in Federal District Court in Dallas against Defendants Facebook, Oculus and its management, ZeniMax and id Software welcome the opportunity to present substantial evidence of the Defendants’ misappropriation of our Virtual Reality (VR) intellectual property. That evidence includes the theft of trade secrets and highly confidential information, including computer code. ZeniMax will also present evidence of the Defendants’ intentional destruction of evidence to cover up their wrongdoing. ZeniMax and id Software are the visionary developers of breakthrough VR technology, and look forward to the vindication of our claims.”

Zenimax accuses Oculus of stealing trade secrets, “highly confidential information,” such as computer code, and a charge of intentionally covering up alleged wrongdoing by destroying evidence.

Carmack is accused of copying documents belonging to Zenimax to a USB thumb drive.

The ZeniMax case against Oculus was originally filed in 2014. In August 2016, it was updated to include Oculus chief technology officer John Carmack and CEO Brendan Iribe as defendants. Carmack, who left id Software in 2013, is accused of copying documents belonging to Zenimax to a USB thumb drive.

It also accuses Carmack of returning to Zenimax after joining Oculus and taking a tool for working on virtual reality. After the case was filed, Carmack issued a statement denying the allegations against him, saying Oculus uses none of the code he wrote while at ZeniMax. He added while the original code he wrote belongs to Zenimax, “they don’t own VR.”

Mark Zuckerberg will take the stand to answer questions about Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus. Oculus founder Palmer Luckey is set to take the stand later in the week.

According to VentureBeat, Facebook claims the lawsuit is motivated by Zenimax having passed on Oculus before it was acquired by the social media giant.

Zenimax seeks $2 billion USD in damages, the same amount Facebook paid to acquire Oculus in the first place.
