Yahoo Changing Its Name to Altaba, CEO to Depart

Big changes for the web giant.

Yahoo chief executive officer Marissa Mayer and co-founder David Filo are leaving the company once the company’s sale to Verizon is complete.

According to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Mayer, Filo, and several other board members are stepping down. The company will also change its name to Altaba, Inc.

Verizon is buying Yahoo’s core business for roughly $4.8 billion USD.

At the end of 2016, Yahoo revealed two separate unauthorized breaches compromised a total of 1 billion users, the largest single-company data breaches in history. According to a New York Times report, security teams often butted heads with Mayer, who wanted to place emphasis on a cleaner UI for Yahoo’s users rather than beefing up security.

The board resignations go into effect once the deal between Verizon and Yahoo closes.

Yahoo was once the top search site on the internet, and in 1998 had a chance to buy a company for $1 million that would later become the company we now know as Google.

WoW 7.1.5 Patch Notes Revealed in Full

A day before the big 7.1.5 update launches for World of Warcraft, Blizzard has released the full patch notes.

All of the major new features were already known: Mists of Pandaria Timewalking, the Brawler’s Guild, and micro-holidays. These patch notes more fully detail the many class and profession-specific changes that been discussed in broader terms previously. They’re too lengthy to list in full here, but the goal has been described as improving class balance and providing more viable talent choices.

There are also new Legendary items (and changes to existing ones), a way to use the quest tracker to find premade groups, and updates to Artifact Knowledge. It should now be easier to level up Knowledge on your alternate characters (if you’re already level 110) or on your main if you’re just reaching level 110 for the first time.

One change that’s already attracted a lot of negative feedback involves Artifact traits. Those at or above 35 points have been enabled for use in PvP, which will provide certain players with a dramatic, potentially game-breaking advantage. It remains to be seen if this will prove to be true in action or if Blizzard has some other, unmentioned change that will compensate for this.

Patch 7.1.5 launches tomorrow, January 10. For more on what to expect, check out our previous coverage.

Overwatch Voice Lines Point to a Valentine's Day Event

Overwatch‘s next seasonal event may be coming up in just a few weeks, based on newly discovered voice lines.

As shared today by Reddit user akhanubis, the most recent PTR update contains a number of voice lines that may be used in the future. Not all of them are confirmed as being new, but several appear to be. Two, in particular, suggest Blizzard will add an Valentine’s Day event, as they feature Mercy and Genji talking about gifting each other chocolates. You can listen to them here.

Overwatch Voice Lines Point to a Valentine's Day Event

The timing wouldn’t be far off what we’ve seen since last summer, when Overwatch’s first seasonal event debuted. So far there have been three: the Olympics (started in August), Halloween (October), and Christmas (December). The Christmas event was also leaked by dataminers who found what ended up being the update’s Christmas-themed menu music.

Blizzard hasn’t offered any official schedule for when more events or content will be released, but it has made it clear that plenty more is on the way.

Earlier this month, the new Oasis map debuted on all platforms. The PTR update that includes these Valentine’s voice lines was introduced even more recently, nerfing Roadhog and D.Va and making some other changes. These adjustments are still in testing, and you can try them out for yourself right now if you own the PC version. A date for when they’ll launch in the live game hasn’t been announced.

All of Heroes of the Storm's Characters Are Free to Play This Weekend

As it has a few times in the past, Blizzard will allow Heroes of the Storm players to try out every character in the game for free over the course of a few days.

Starting this Friday, January 13, players will have three days to play as its full roster of 60-plus heroes. That includes even the most recent additions, such as Zul’jin, Varian (the first multi-class character), and Ragnaros (who can transform into a giant raid boss of sorts).

This promotion doesn’t tie in with any other event; it seems to merely be a way of promoting the as it heads into the new year. The video above highlights many of the key additions from 2016.

Unlike fellow free-to-play MOBA Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm requires players to purchase individual characters with in-game gold or real-world money to play as them. There’s also a rotating lineup of free characters each week, though there’s usually a long wait before the newest additions (like those mentioned above) make it into that rotation.

The free event starts at 10 AM PT on January 13 and runs through the same time on January 16.

Star Wars: Episode 8 Director Rian Johnson on Rey, Luke Skywalker, and the Film’s Opening Scene

The opening scene will show Rey and Luke’s first confrontation.

Star Wars: Episode VIII will pick up right where The Force Awakens left off, with Rey confronting Luke Skywalker on that remote island.

While speaking to USA Today, Episode VIII director and writer Rian Johnson explained that he has no desire to skip ahead a few years after Rey and Luke’s first meeting. Johnson wants to see and show “the very next moment of what happens” after Rey approaches Luke with his lightsaber.

Johnson also revealed that most of Episode VIII will be about the relationship between Rey and Luke and the specific ways they relate to each other. The film will address exactly why Luke went into hiding on the mysterious island of Ahch-To, while Rey will be dealing with her newfound powers and strong connection to the Force.

Got feedback on our player?

We want to hear it.

“She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential,” Johnson said.

Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters December 15, 2017.

Kylo Ren actor Adam Driver recently shared how Episode VIII will explore Ren’s “humanity” and terrorism. Driver has been praising Johnson’s filmmaking, and compared Episode VIII’s script to The Empire Strikes Back.
