Before it’s a Movie, Read About The 1980’s Throwdown Between Nintendo and Sega

There’s a reason Seth Rogen has the rights to make Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation into a movie: it’s fantastic story of corporate rivalry and intrigue, set against an awesomely eighties background. It’s The Social Network for the early years of the video game industry and it can be yours to read on Kindle for only $2 (paperback copies are usually around $8. That’s the cheapest it’s ever been and remember, you can read Kindle books on any phone, laptop, or tablet, just download the Kindle app.

Star Wars: Rogue One No Match for The Force Awakens’ Debut in China

Share.

Earning less than half of The Force Awakens’ opening figure.

Despite opening at the top of the box office in China this week, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s debut was comparatively far lower than Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Disney’s new Star Wars film earned $9.7 million during its Friday opening in China, and a total of $10.4 million when factoring in Thursday night screenings, according to data from Ent Group, Variety reports.

Got feedback on our player?

We want to hear it.

This is significantly weaker than Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ impressive debut in China last year, as the J.J. Abrams-directed film earned $27.8 million during its Saturday debut in January 2016. It’s worth noting, however, that this was before the Chinese box office took a dive in May of last year.

According to ticketing firm Weiying Technology, Rogue One sales made up 60 percent of China’s theatrical market share on Friday, with all movies cumulatively earning a mere $15.9 million in the nation.

For more on Disney and Lucasfilms’ latest Star Wars film, which surpassed Captain America: Civil War to  become North America’s second highest-grossing movie of 2016, read IGN’s Rogue One review.

Steam Sets New Concurrent User Record

Valve’s PC service Steam has set a new concurrent user record.

Kotaku noticed that for the first time in the service’s history, more than 14.2 million people were logged in at the same today, January 7. Some of the US east coast is currently in the midst of a cold, winter storm, so maybe more people than usual are staying inside to play games.

Steam Sets New Concurrent User Record

14.2 million concurrent users is up from 12.3 million in January 2016. By Valve’s latest count, Steam had 125 million users, though this number is from February 2015, so the number is surely higher now.

Here is a ranking of the top 10 games on Steam right now by player count:

Steam Sets New Concurrent User Record

Steam shares this information through its public Steam Stats page. Microsoft and Sony do not typically share the same kind of user concurrency information about Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.

Mass Effect: Andromeda Won't Have a Season Pass

BioWare’s highly anticipated RPG Mass Effect: Andromeda will not have a Season Pass for DLC.

BioWare GM Aaryn Flynn confirmed this and more on Twitter today (via DualShockers). Asked directly if Andromeda would have a Season Pass, Flynn succinctly stated, “Nope.”

Mass Effect: Andromeda Won't Have a Season Pass

Pressed for more details, like whether there will be story DLC, if it will be free, or if Andromeda’s DLC will be limited to multiplayer, Flynn said, “We’ll talk more about that later :)”

EA’s Titanfall 2 also does not have a Season Pass.

Also today, Flynn confirmed on Twitter that Andromeda will not be available in Arabic, at least not at launch. Additionally, Mass Effect’s Twitter account confirmed that, like most other EA games, EA Access members will get to play Andromeda early.

@nazihfares Just heard that we will not support Arabic at launch. However, we can look into it as a future patch

— Aaryn Flynn (@AarynFlynn) January 7, 2017

Andromeda launches on March 21 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. For lots more on the game, check out all of GameSpot’s previous coverage here.
